Leeds, West Yorkshire — A serious multi-vehicle collision on the eastbound M62 near Leeds has resulted in multiple lane closures and significant traffic delays as emergency services continue to respond at the scene. The incident has disrupted travel along one of West Yorkshire’s busiest motorway routes, with motorists urged to expect lengthy delays and consider alternative routes.

The collision occurred on the eastbound carriageway of the M62 near Junction 26 (Chain Bar). According to preliminary reports, the crash involved three vehicles, including a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and two passenger cars. The impact left several lanes blocked, bringing traffic to a standstill during a busy travel period.

Emergency responders from West Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Paramedics assessed those involved, while firefighters worked to free one individual who became trapped inside a damaged vehicle. An air ambulance was also reported in the area to provide specialist medical support if required.

National Highways implemented traffic management measures shortly after the incident, closing multiple eastbound lanes to allow emergency personnel to work safely. As a result, traffic delays exceeding an hour have been reported, with congestion extending several miles toward Junction 24 and affecting nearby roads.

Recovery crews remain on site removing damaged vehicles, clearing debris, and addressing any hazards, including reported fuel spillages. The complexity of the recovery operation means lane closures are expected to remain in place until the roadway can be safely reopened.

West Yorkshire Police’s Road Policing Unit has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officers are examining the scene, documenting evidence, and working to establish the sequence of events that led to the crash.

Authorities are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact West Yorkshire Police, as investigators continue gathering information.

At this stage, officials have not released confirmed details regarding the severity of any injuries or announced when all lanes will fully reopen. National Highways continues to advise motorists to avoid the area where possible, allow extra travel time, and follow official traffic updates.

The M62 crash remains under investigation as emergency services and highway crews work to safely reopen the motorway. Further updates are expected as recovery operations progress and additional information becomes available.
